Cheers for Ligue 1 Beers
Or should we say… Bières.
We told you the takes would be hot right??? ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED? Well, we ALSO told you the beers would be cold. Time to come through on the second half of that prophecy with our list of recommended beers for your Ligue 1 viewing, based on what’s commonly available in your average French corner bar. Yes, we know that Ligue 1 is usually not on American TV, and when it is, it’s on at like…. 11 am but hey! If Covid has taught us anything, it’s that time is totally meaningless! So grab a cold one with the boys with the girls and ICI C’EST PARIS.
*Please drink RESPONSIBLY okay!!*
TOP 5 BEERS FOR LIGUE 1
5. Heineken
Heineken will always have a special place in my heart because The Heineken Experience in Amsterdam was HILARIOUS and honestly some of the best 18 euro I’ve spent. However, in general, the beer is just fine. I’ll make do if I must, but in a world of Neymars and Mbappés, it’s a Kehrer if you know what I mean.
4. Hoegaarden
Hoegaarden is the perfect solution for all you people out there being like “ I just like a wheaty beer”. Here ya go. It’s got nice orangey notes, it’s pretty low ABV (4,9%),it’s Belgian, looks great in a liter glass, what more do you want. Also, its name makes us think of a biergarten but for bad bitches. AKA, our kind of place.
3. Stella Artois
Probably best known in the US for a commercial referring to the beer as “she’ and exclaiming about ‘her beauty” (to be fair beer is feminine in French, a language they speak in Belgium), Stella is the beer to order when you want to have a cool glass (which you might later appropriate, that’s none of our business)
2. Leffe
I know what you’re thinking. These are fine and all, but where are the heavy hitters?? America, meet Leffe. This beer is going to F you up. Clocking in at anywhere between 6,6%- 6,9%, these beers go down surprisingly easily. First you’re having a sip on the banks of the Seine, next thing you know you’ve missed the last metro and have to take the Noctilien. (RT if you relate). Leffe comes in a bunch of flavors, including signature varieties like Ruby (brewed with red fruits like raspberries and elderflower juice) and Noël, neither of which I’ve ever found in the US, but here’s hoping. The classics are Blonde et Brun (that means blonde and brown ales, that’s right we are secretly teaching you french!), either of which will definitely get the job done. You should be able to find Leffe at your local liquor store/grocery store (yes it will be 2x the price it should be, buy it anyways.)
1. Kronebourg 1664
Fittingly, we crown our list for the French Ligue with the French beer, 1664 aka Seize (pronounced like s-eh-z). Founded in (you guessed it) in 1664 in Strasbourg, Seize is an easy-drinking light pale lager (5,5% ABV) that is the most widely sold French beer worldwide. Is it the best tasting? Eh. Hence why some people mix it with flavored syrups at parties. Is that important?? No. When you think NFL, what beer do you think of? Bud light. It’s iconic. It’s American! It’s your patriotic DUTY to chug some Bud on Superbowl Sunday!!! (never mind that Bud is owned by international corporation AB InBev like many of the beers on this list, MURICA BABY). Same thing here. Ligue 1 is synonymous with a pint of Seize. Pop that cap and let’s get the party started.
